Overview
You'll feel on top of the world at this constantly improving cottage in the Taha area of the Alpujarras.
Walks, nature, peace-and-quiet, swims during the hot months and a great view are what’s on offer here. Not forgetting some country restaurants with terraces where you will soak up the mountain countryside atmosphere. After a day's hiking, you can also soak happily in the jacuzzi bathtub at the cottage.
It’s a neat villa in a private location: not too far from shops, restaurants and bars in the villages of Pitres and Portugos, but far enough up in the sierra to be nicely secluded. You’ll find it has all you need for a private holiday experience in the high Andalucian mountains.
You have a very inviting swimming pool with Roman steps, and sunbeds in a garden to relax and enjoy the sun and the views. The pool is screened off and gated for extra child safety.
The villa has private parking and is accessed through the front garden via a broad, attractively paved patio planted with ancient olive trees.
There’s an ample porch (50 m²) which has cool, smooth tile underfoot and roofing made with local architectural techniques of wood and slate. The outdoor dining table and chairs provided here and its shade from the mountain sun make this an obvious spot for meals and drinks.
There’s also a pergola by the pool which offers an alternative shady spot.
Inside, the main living area is surprisingly spacious (60 m²), open plan with the kitchen and dining area. The dining table is comfortably large enough to seat six people.
As you might expect from an owner whose family supplies building materials and fittings for kitchens and bathrooms, everything is well put together with good quality items. Although a new build, you will note that wood beams and slate are used decoratively in ceilings to lend a rustical feel to the villa’s atmosphere.
There are three bedrooms, not huge but perfectly adequate, and all with south-facing windows. They have insect netting so that you can keep them open on summer nights.
The swimming pool is a good size (8 m x 4 m) with exterior lighting and set in private gardens that are planted round for intimacy.
The climate here brings four marked seasons, with the sun being the star attraction. In winter months, it can be cold at night and an efficient central heating system is then fired by the wood stove. Normally, though, you’ll be spending a great deal of time outside, enjoying your very own patch of Andalusian mountain countryside.
A network of paths that joins together neighbouring villages enables you to enjoy some marvellous walks all year. They take you along tracks past well-tended market gardens, apple and cherry orchards, isolated farmhouses and the all-important system of acequias (irrigation channels), that keep everything watered and alive. As you ascend above the villa, the sea comes into view (see photo), reminding you that Mediterranean beaches is not that far away for a day trip.
During the hottest hours of the afternoon in high summer, which as everyone knows here in Andalucia is what siestas were invented for, we suggest you cool off, rest and enjoy a dip. The villa’s position on the rise of a hill means that gentle breezes come to allay the heat, and it's deeply tranquil here.
The property is reached from a country lane up a steepish, winding track: a normal size hire car with decent power is recommended.
You have two good, small supermarkets in the villages of Portugos and Pitres to choose from and all your normal shopping needs will be met here. There’s also a short-cut to Portugos village via a path (but take a torch and mind the brambles at night) that takes just 10 minutes.
We’ll send you a detailed local guide with useful information for the area as one of your holiday documents. The guide will tell you about local attractions such as the Poqueira Gorge, give you booking information for the Alhambra if you're planning a trip to Granada or want to see the Alhambra, and directions to a special little beach on the Costa Tropical.
Location
South-facing Mediterranean mountain valley. Las Alpujarras region (southern slopes of Sierra Nevada).
In a private location at the end of an 800-metre track, 2 km by car from Pitres or Portugos (most facilities). 10 mins walk from Portugos when the path is clear.

We had a superb holiday! The communication from both Rustical Travel and the hosts, Adrian and Carmen was very good and we were sent really helpful videos by Adrian explaining how to get to the cortijo and how to enter it. The cortijo, garden and pool were beautifully clean and the location is stunning. It's so peaceful too! We loved the area and enjoyed the village of Pitres. Pitres has everything you need - supermarket, bakers, butchers and a weekly market. It was great! Highly recommend for a relaxing break!"

+ Read moreA really lovely and exceptionally nice property. The nearby village of Pitres is handy for shopping with an excellent market and is very uncommercialised compared with many other better known places that are swamped by tourists and coaches. The bar on the slope up to the market square is in a sunny spot and serves excellent snacks. Only downside is the final part of the drive to the property which could put off nervous drivers."
+ Read moreWe stayed at the Villa for a week in September 21. Adrian our host was very helpful and knowledgable. The Villa has everything you need for a week’s get away of peace and tranquility in the beautiful Granada countryside. The views from the garden are spectacular and the pool was lovely and Adrian ensured it was kept to a high level of cleanliness. The local village of Pitres has an excellent bakery, well equipped supermarket and an excellent Tapas Bar, plus a wonderful restaurant - El Jardin de Mirador. The only slight negative for us was the access road to the Villa which is very steep and has many sharp bends - luckily we had a 4 wheel drive car which we believe is a must for staying here."

+ Read moreThe villa was wonderful, better than we imagined. Our host Adrian was very helpful, friendly and made us feel at home straight away. What an amazing setting. We definitely have fallen in love with the Alpurrjas. The only comment I have to make for improvement is there was a strong smell in the central bathroom (not ensuite) which seemed to be coming from a problem with the drain. This could be smelt in the adjoining bedrooms too. And perhaps one other suggestion would be to provide basic cooking ingredients like salt and pepper and oil. We did have a wonderful arrival present of wine and chocolate though! Overall, an excellent visit and accommodation. Many thanks."
Rustical Update
The property manager informed us that he normally doesn't leave cooking items at the property for hygiene reasons. Also, in September 2019 he examined the house (and has also checked with other guests) and hasn't found any kind of drain smell in the bathrooms, so this must have been a one-time happening.
We had a lovely peaceful holiday in this villa just outside Pitres . It would be a great base for walking in La Alpujarra mountains but the roads are not for the faint hearted - the views are spectacular however. The villa had everything you could wish for on a relaxing holiday, the host Adrian was very helpful . The pool provided welcome relief - particularly after a hot day walking round the Alhambra which was about a 90 minute drive away . We could not fault the holiday - it was just what we needed ."
+ Read moreAbsolutely brilliant villa, really lovely well equipped and in a beautiful peaceful location. Adrian the owner couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. Perfect for a get away from it all holiday. Would not hesitate to go back again (Didn't really want to leave) and recommend it and Rustical travel to friends and family."
+ Read moreA great villa in a lovely location, with easy access to a range of walks in the area. The owner was very helpful - and a mine of information. Chris, Clare, Max and Thomas."
Your website and is the most effective we have used and it provides detailed information. We are very happy with the service and will use it again. The villa was one of the best we've been in the last 20 years. People are friendly and welcoming. We love the people and the country. Thank you for a splendid holiday. Steve & Lorna"
+ Read moreWe loved our holiday, thank you! The house was excellent - very comfortable with all that we needed, including both sunny and shady areas outside at all times of day and a lovely pool and fruit and herbs to pick in the garden. All ages, ranging from grandmother through to teenage daughters, enjoyed it very much. Adrian was extremely kind, friendly and helpful. As were the rest of his family when we met them too. He sorted out minor problems for us immediately, gave local advice and deciphered bus timetables for us! There were also lots of useful leaflets and books in the house. We also brought walking books and a walking map with us and could go on fantastic walks straight fro the house. The detailed information that the company sent us before our holiday was really amazing and made a big difference to our holiday. It was so helpful and having it in advance was even better. All the local detailed information made a real difference to our holiday especially as tiny villages and hamlets in the Alpujarras don't get much of a mention in the guide books. The only thing that would have improved the holiday would have been to know that the road/track up to the house was as steep and windy as it was so that we could have rented a car with a proper handbrake (very strange but it didn't have one!) and more power. Now we are longing to come back and wondering whether you have a house with a pool in the area big enough for 12 of us for next summer! Many thanks."
