Overview
Some decades ago, a local Antequera shepherd, on his daily rounds, decided to climb a high hill. When he arrived at the top, he discovered another landscape, another country almost: the spot had outstanding views all the way south as far as the sea, and he fell in love with the beautiful piece of land just below the ridge. At the time, he never dreamed that many years later, he would build right there, in an impressive estate by Torcal National Park holiday cottage. Sheep and goats must be more profitable than we thought.
The cottage remains a tranquil retreat, distinctive and persuasive. It is on its own, totally private and not overlooked. Decades after the shepherd found it, the location feels very rural and unspoilt, on a hillside with evergreen oaks.
The location has much to recommend it. The Antequera mountain area is just about the prettiest point in central Andalucia from which day visits to Cordoba, Granada and Seville are all possible.
The property is very private. It has excellent views, a lovely pool and lawned gardens.
The house is well-finished, well-equipped and roomy, with high ceilings. We weren’t much enamoured of the decorative hangings (pictures and engravings being rather tacky), but the furniture is agreeably chunky and sofas very comfy. The layout works well, too: all on one floor with a shaded porch area, and the pool and barbecue close at hand. A good design for easy, lazy holidays.
The requirements you would expect of a decent quality villa are all there. Only the TV reception seemed to be unreliable.
As you come in there is a kitchen with breakfast bar, dining area and lounge, all open plan. A hallway leads to two bedrooms, one twin-bedded and one double-bedded. Each has en suite bathroom facilities with full-size bathtubs and showers.
From the porch terrace area, as well as from the delightful gardens, the views of the Montes de Malaga mountains and the Guadalhorce valley are superb. It is peaceful and pastoral, very rural here in the heart of Andalucia. On clear days you can just make out the Mediterranean Sea.
There is a good-sized swimming pool and garden furniture. The pool is not gated, otherwise we consider the property to be child-friendly.
This is a good place to rest and relax, maybe take up goat-watching? The sound of their bells typifies this very Spanish region of El Torcal. The road opposite the house is very quiet, and occasionally a car goes by.
Clients staying here have liked the way privacy is combined with the beautiful scenery. La Joya (“the jewel”), a predominantly farming village that is far less touristy than similar places in the region, is just 2 km from the villa. It has a restaurant that offers traditional food with a lovely terrace by the square in summer months.
Location
Hillside by El Torcal natural reserve, in rural Antequera.
Easily accessed via private country lane. 2 km from La Joya village (simple shopping, bars, bank, restaurant).

YOUR REVIEWS
Lovely villa in a great location with stunning views, a lovely hamper upon arrival was fabulous. Pool great, lovely garden and having hotel nearby was an added bonus. There were a couple of issues, one being there was only one entrance/exit which meant no fire escape, all the windows had bars which looked pretty as it is a Spanish property but you could not get out of any of the windows had we needed to in an emergency, having no other exit in case of fire worried me. The other negative was a neighbouring villa let their dogs run loose and they were very large dogs one was especially large and they kept coming into the garden so we had to ring the hotel to get the owner to retrieve the animals. We are dog lovers but these three dogs were large and looked like guard dogs so we were frightened of them biting although they just walked around, didn’t bark at us but we still felt intimidated by the sheer size and breed. The children were frightened of these dogs as was I but we were informed they are harmless by the hotel. However I do feel the dogs should be kept gated on their own property and not allowed to roam free. Other than the two issues mentioned above the villa was lovely but they should consider the safety aspect and look at another exit point. Lisa forte (Uk)"
Rustical Update
Following our conversation with the local managers, they trust that the situation with the neighbouring dogs is not a common occurrence, and they say they will monitor it closely to ensure future guests feel comfortable. In terms of safety, the property follows local building regulations, and while there are no current plans for additional exits, the layout is typical of small traditional Spanish cottages.
Our second time at this property and loved it as much as last time. The house is well designed in a great location- peaceful mountainside with great views, and gentle breeze. The Hotel Fuente d Sol with its great restaurant is a very short walk away. We’ll be back again."

+ Read moreWe absolutely loved our stay here. The setting in just beautiful and you are immediately relaxed. Loved the pool and the fact that both bedrooms had en suites! We love cooking so could do with a bit more storage and utensils and perhaps a hob upgrade but other than that - magic ❤️ x"
+ Read moreWe really enjoyed our stay at El Encinar. The pool and the views are fantastic. The food and wine at Hotel Fuente Del Sol was also fantastic and great to have this a short walk away. We felt the villa could have been a little better equipped (items in the kitchen could have been better and the sun loungers and pool towels may need to be replaced soon) and also some of the electrical items need to be fixed (E.g washing machine door, fans and light bulbs replaced). We would go back again as we were comfortable and the negatives can be easily rectified. We also thought information / liaison provided by Rustical Travel and the Hotel were excellent."

+ Read moreGreat house with stunning views. Easily the hotel and village are within walking distance. : Housekeeping came only upon request after the 1st week. Maintaining the pool could be better. We'll be back!"
+ Read moreExcellent location with stunning views. Very private and quiet (apart from the goats!!) Just what we wanted and expected. It was good to have the hotel near for occasional meals. Villa was very comfortable although there was a lack of storage space in the kitchen. garden and pool very well maintained. We did have to go to the hotel and remind them to change linen and towels after the first week which they did very swiftly and there was no problem the following week. There was a very comprehensive booklet. Directions were good but maybe you could include distances between places/turnings?. Be assured we were very happy with the villa and none of the above would put us off going again."
+ Read moreWe have nothing but positive things to say about this property. We loved everything about it - not least the incredible views! It was spacious, clean, quiet, private, comfortable, and totally relaxing. The thoughtful presentation and welcoming touches made us feel pampered and at home straight away. We were very sad indeed to leave (we are a family, kids 10 and 13)"
+ Read moreWe very much enjoyed our holiday at AX21. The property was exactly what we expected from your description and pictures and the location was just what we were looking for. We would love to come back another time, for a longer period! We did not make use of the facilities at the neighbouring hotel, but they were kind enough to lend us some coffee when we forget to buy some, and accepted our luggage, which missed our plane, the day after our arrival, allowing us to go out on our planned day trip and not have to wait around for our luggage to be delivered. A real bonus to having a property manager nearby! The directions to the property provided by Rustical Travel were straightforward and simple to follow - and when our luggage needed to be delivered the next day, I gave your printed directions to the airport clerk, she phoned the hotel phone number you provided, and they sent her the same instructions in Spanish for their driver. What more could you ask for? We have used several European Rental agencies over the past 18 years, and Rustical Travel gave us the best service by a mile. The ease of booking, the value of the price paid, the quality of the local information and directions, and the accurate depiction of the property were all first class. We will definitely use you again in the future, and will be recommending you to others. Thanks for a great holiday!"
+ Read moreWe thought the cottage was excellent. We enjoyed the welcome pack. Had to ask for the swimming pool to be topped up. The water supply to the property stopped two or three times. The staff at the hotel were always polite and helpful but not terribly proactive. The lovely views made it all worthwhile."
+ Read moreA wonderful holiday thanks and we will recommend Rustical Travel to our friends. Property was excellent and good value for money. Views were spectacular. We would certainly book with you again when we next visit Spain. The only minor points of concern were: 1. The hotel had a party on our final night with music late into the morning. 2. Whilst directions to the property were very good, it is worth reminding customers that the mountain roads are quite narrow and isolated, as we did wonder at one point if we were still on the right road! Thank you."
Rustical Update
The staff at the hotel confirmed to us that events or weddings playing music at the hotel are very unusual, so this was pretty unlucky. They rarely host celebrations as they are aware that it can spoilt the special tranquility of the setting. We have added a note to the directions, as suggested here.
This house is everything we hoped for. The shopping we found on our arrival went way beyond our expectations and was very thoughtful of you. Breakfast on Sunday was perfect and just what we wanted. We thank you and the hotel for making everything so easy for us. Once again you gave us the magic of the spanish scenery and a wonderful place to stay. All your information and advice was very useful and we really appreciate all you do to make our stay so comfortable. Rustical Travel always give that little bit extra which is why we keep coming back."
