Overview
Some places stop you in your tracks, and glimpsing the 10th-century historical villa looming against the balmy Mediterranean backdrop of the Pyrenees, you are sure to fall for the wow factor.
Gold gleams against the evergreen trees, the peaks climb to dizzying heights, and clear waters wash down the mountainside. This is a spot where the sun spills over the lawns, you can swim in the natural water holes close by, and heavy wooden doors hide secrets from the past.
Occupied in the Spanish Civil War and with its tiny chapel and ancient museum, every nook and cranny of this home is crammed with stories.
Heavy stone, open arches, cavernous rooms, and exposed beams set the scene for a seven-bedroom property that leaves a lasting impression.
Old and new collide most dazzlingly; the 10th-century wing, with its low ceilings and high steps, has been turned into a superior games room with a pool table and cinema seating. 18th-century frescoes adorn the first floor, and a 200-year-old bathtub stands elegantly waiting for someone to take a dip.
Despite being a thousand years old, no slight hint of comfort has been sacrificed. Spacious living spaces and generous bedrooms are beautifully laid out across two floors.
Tasteful furnishings and open fireplaces make for the perfect atmosphere to curl up with a vintage bottle of wine and a good book, and terraces and balconies edge the property offering splendid views out over the hills. All the bedrooms are beautiful, with bright tiled floors, romantic lighting, and crisp linens.
Many rooms boast doorways that open to the outside world, offering a sunny place to drink your morning coffee.
The kitchen is charming, cosy, and reasonably well stocked, although you may be hard-pressed to fit 14 chefs into the space. Come rain or shine, and entertainment is never scarce in this historical villa. Young and old will delight in exploring the grounds, the tiny church, the museum, and the hidden pieces of history.
There are two beautiful blue swimming pools for more modern fun – one inside and one out.
In the winter, the indoor pool remains at 28-29 degrees, and a sauna and gym help you stay active.
Children can play to their heart's content in the games room or the lovely outside park placed prettily on the lawn. Everywhere there is a feeling of serenity, generous privacy and picturesque views.
The property managers only drop by early in the morning to tend the pool and collect rubbish bags before disappearing again.
Days can be spent relaxing in the magnificent property, walking in the velvet woodlands, or driving around the winding mountain roads.
Another jewel in the crown is the calm river below the house. This is an idyllic spot for wild swimming; you can spend the whole day plunging into the natural pools, picnicking on the rocks, and indulging in the gifts of nature.
Less than an hour away, you will find awe-inspiring Andorra with incredible tax-free shopping and a plethora of rustic mountain restaurants.
If you prefer to stay closer to home, the village of Coll de Nargo is less than ten minutes from your door and offers basic provisions and a slice of traditional Catalan life.
Location
Alt Urgell, the early folds of Catalonia Pyrenees, in the Lleida province. Well preserved and off the beaten track natural region.
Access via a short tarmac road from a mountain road that links Coll d Nargo and Isona villages. In a private and extensive estate with a view of a pretty canyon area with Mediterranean / alpine forests.

Our family ages 6 to 60, had an absolutely wonderful time at the villa. It’s a beautiful old building that oozes character, has fabulous views of the mountains from every window and has many pretty spots to sit in peace. The games room, gym and pools and boules set were thoroughly enjoyed as was the BBQ area and for the children It’s a perfect ‘hide seek house! The kitchens are really well equipped and there are four different dining areas to choose from. The bedrooms are charming the layout is ideal for large parties of family or friends. We took walks from the villa and saw deer, kayaked on a local reservoir and observed birds of prey and the vultures that were nesting in the cliff face behind us - take binoculars! The villa’s little museum is full of interesting artefacts and Francesc has so much knowledge to share about it - don’t miss it! Marta, her brother Joan and father Francesc were incredibly welcoming and helpful - we only had one minor issue and that was easily sorted within the hour. If you’re looking for rural beauty, peace and a villa with charm and character, you’ve found it…"
+ Read moreA very lovely house. We had a wonderful week with friends. There's so much room inside and outside of the house that you can easily go off for some time to yourself but there's also lots of areas in which you can hang out as a group. Very beautiful area. We've stayed up the hill at Casa Sobre-roca on various occasions too which is also very lovely. But this house is the fancier and better equipped house. More expensive too. But worth every penny."
+ Read moreThis place was truly wonderful. We couldn’t believe how beautiful the building and the surroundings were. The house had a lovely atmosphere – a really peaceful, ancient feeling, and every room was spacious and beautifully furnished. The games room was great, and the kids had a lot of fun playing table tennis and pool. The garden was really pretty, and we loved having an indoor and outdoor swimming pool! The surrounding countryside was very striking, with wooded hills all around, and the neighbouring towns and villages had ample shops for everything we needed. There was also a Padel court ten minutes down the road, which my family were very happy about. Marta was very helpful and communicative before and during the trip, and her father was really friendly and welcoming, and took lots of trouble telling us where to find lovely pools to swim in. I could go on! But all in all, I would recommend this place very highly. We were a party of mixed ages, and every single member of the family absolutely loved it. One of the teenagers described it as “Paradise on Earth.” And the dog had a great time, too! We were very sad to leave, and I hope we will be able to return one day."
+ Read moreWe truly felt like Kings and Queens in our very own castle floating among the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is a beautifully renovated property with amazing facilities. We really didn't stray very far as we took advantage of the many different spaces to chill, read, eat, swim and play. We would love to return one day."
+ Read moreWe had a wonderful stay with 3 families (6 adults and 8 children (9 - 16 yrs)) this July. The property is spacious and its unique history and ancient vaults provide a unique atmosphere. Also unique is the privacy the property provides: from whatever window in the house or place on the property you look, you see nothing but the beautiful green mountainous landscape of the Pyrenees. The pool area is fantastic with its natural umbrella trees, just as the spacious dinner area with BBQ grill (if we'd have to suggest and improvement, it would be adding a second set of crockery and cutlery for the dinner area and renewal of the dishwasher there). Our kids had great fun in the games room. In short, an unforgettable stay and a place to get back to."

Rustical Update
We have informed the property manager about the kitchen equipment, and he confirmed that he will check it to see if there's anything that needs to be replenished.
Our host, Francesc, did everything possible to make us comfortable and happy. The property is amazing, the scenery fabulous, and the skies at night are unbeatable with galaxies clearly visible. My only regret is that walking was not permitted in the nearby woods, and we never did find the wild pool referred to by other reviewers. However, we did enjoy kayaking locally and further afield canyoning and mountain biking. A beautiful location and a holiday to remember for us all, thank you Fransesc."
Rustical Update
We have been informed by the property manager that the local authorities have closed all the easy accesses to the nearest swimming spot in the river as it was getting too overcrowded with visitors (noise, cars, etc). But there is another spot a bit further that can be accessed and is only 3 min away by car, the property manager can provide indications for this.
The house was something very magical. Not only was it nestled in the foothills of some beautiful mountains but it also had all the facilities to keep 11 people entertained for a week! Which is a lot if u know my family. Waking to breakfast on the balcony and lounging in the evenings round the inside table was something quite brilliant. Perfect for big family get togethers and special occasions. The pools were lovely as was the hidden wild swimming, as well as this it was a great joy to play table tennis when it was raining. I recommend this house wholeheartedly, it has all the charm of the past with all the trimmings of luxury."
+ Read moreThe house was fabulous! It was as beautiful as the photos! Everything was as we hoped. Our host, Francesc could not do enough to make our stay perfect! He was superb. The quiet was unexpected and welcome. All we heard was rushing water at the absolutely pristine stream, birds and cicadas. It was so peaceful. The kitchen was well equipped. The pool was clean. The bedrooms were comfortable. The museum was an added bonus and much appreciated! All in all we loved it! May be the best holiday we have ever had! We hope to be back soon. (The only drawback was the flies. The house would benefit by adding screens to the kitchen windows. No other insects bothered us.)"
Rustical Update
We have passed to the property manager the suggestion to add mosquito nets to the kitchen, and he said he will install them for next year.
We arrived to be amazed at the sheer wonder and beauty of this tranquil villa and the surrounding area, we were awestruck! We met the owner who showed us around and we soon learned the property has a lot of interesting history. The interior layout made you know you were staying somewhere very special, we loved it!! It is very clean and is very well stocked with everything you need for a luxury vacation, the pool was magical under the hot sun! We had a truly wonderful stay here we felt everything was just perfect! Thank you to the owners and thank you to Rustical Travel whose arrangements were easy with no fuss and was a pleasure to deal with, we would certainly use these guys again."

+ Read moreWe adored Villa CA35! It is a truly stunning house in a breathtaking setting. Every bedroom is gorgeous. And taking in the views from any of the balconies was wonderful. The pool area is very pretty. Fransesc and his son Joan took good care of us, not only with regard to the villa, but also offer advice about the area. We also really appreciated how well stocked the Villa was. The kitchen was fully loaded with dishes, glasses, cook ware, and every room has lots of extra blankets and towels. It was a wonderful experience to stay in such a historical villa and we all really miss it!"
+ Read moreWonderful place to visit. Great location and very good service. Would visit again. The place would though benefit from more in-room-fans and an outdoor gas grill."
+ Read moreThe service from staff at Rustical Travel was perfect. They always responded promptly to my questions, were polite, friendly and professional. The host was also fantastic. He was on time, helpful and kind. I couldn't have hoped for a better host. His English was good enough and he was patient with my bad spanish. The house was beyond expectations and looked even better than in the pictures. I had one of the best holidays of my life and I wouldn't hesitate to book a holiday with Rustical Travel again. I have already recommended the company to my friends and family and plan on booking another holiday with you soon. Many, many thanks!"
