Overview
We are always seeking intriguing places for our guests to stay and this rare spot on the Mediterranean could be pulled straight from the pages of an Umberto Eco novel.
The Costa Brava is full of surprises and finding this startling 12th century home in a medieval village was certainly a win for our team. Not only do you get an extraordinary property with lashings of history and unrivalled facilities but you also get a lovely location surrounded by untouched beaches, hidden coves, and mountains.
The village La Vall has retained its rich medieval heritage and, thanks to its sheltered sight from the sea, remained relatively unknown to pirates and gangs passing through these parts. For centuries, La Vall stayed safe with only the pirate Redbeard aware of its existence.
The hidden treasure village is brimming with tales and secret tunnels as a testament to its fascinating past. To this day La Vall has a hidden feel as there are no cars allowed to pass through, meaning that you can sip a beer to the sound of birdsong.
The village itself is overlooked by the imposing Monastir of San Pere and your stunning stone property was the old forge of the monastery for centuries. 300 years ago, it turned from forge to a cabaret and after the Spanish Civil War it became a café.
This home has lived many lives and the owners have well documented the history of the house, collecting a thousand years of stories and preserving its original features as best they can.
The bedrock and arches from the property date back to the 12th century, although this property knows how to make the most of modern day comforts.
Even though there are stone walls, exposed beams, and Juliet balconies -there is also a chillout zone with billiard table, a mini movie theater, and a bubbling jacuzzi inside one of the ancient arches.
Those wanting outside space will be excited to hear that the historical home comes with its own private gardens and that the monastery can be reached by a small signposted path right outside your door. The gardens are a gorgeous mix of mature trees, bushes, and a shady pergola for sipping drinks in the afternoon.
For al fresco dining the terrace works best thanks to its barbeque and location close to the kitchen. We also suggest walking to the nearby restaurant and dining on fresh fish on their stunning terrace if visiting between June and October.
Despite the hidden sight from the sea, your closest beach is only a 5-minute drive, for those who want a scenic walk you can also stroll through the wooded ravine and reach the pebbled shores in 30 minutes. If you prefer sand beneath your feet, then you can find endless stretches of sand less than 10 minutes away.
This area is part of the Cap de Santa Creu, a highly protected peninsula full of cliffs and coves that can be explored pirate style by sailing the coast from Llansa.
Guests staying for longer than a week can make the most of their surroundings and visit the Empuriabrava to see the largest residential marina in Europe.
Those visiting for less than a week may prefer to stay local and take advantage of the hikes close by that showcase panoramic views of the sea and the snowy caps of the Pyrenees. Figueras and the famous Dali museum are also a half hour drive for art and history buffs.
For those who want a truly unique adventure close to Southern Europe’s best preserved coastal spots, this 12th century home can offer a once in a lifetime stay.

YOUR REVIEWS
we loved the location, we loved the space on the house, the house was well equipped, walking distance to a lovely beach. Very quiet little village. Albert, the owner, and his wife were very friendly and Took as time as we needed to go through the workings of the house! Would recommend!"
+ Read moreA wonderful location and beautiful house for our holiday. The house had everything you could need and is located in a peaceful and picturesque little village, with a charming restaurant around the corner. Highly recommended for a very relaxing holiday. While the house is indeed within walking distance of the beach, (and we walked it a few times), it is not a realistic option, particularly with small children in the summer heat."
+ Read moreThis was another last minute booking for us to a part of Spain we had never ventured and we feel very blessed to have found such a gem and our new favourite part of Spain. The history of this house is beautiful, as is its decor and location in the little village of La Vall. We had our best meals in the restaurant in the village and the hike up to the monastery was a definite highlight. Though El Port de la Selva stole our hearts and we spent many happy hours fishing in the harbour, on scuba diving trips and just lounging having coffee and ice cream. There is no doubt that we will return."
